Thomas "Tom" Slusser Obituary

Carton, KS formerly

Columbus Grove, Ohio

The honorable and noble 1SG Thomas “Tom” R. Slusser, US Army, retired, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, May 9, 2021, with his family by his side.

Tom was born on January 5, 1951, in Lima, Ohio to Oran M. and Alice L. (Burman) Slusser, who preceded him in death.  In March of 1972, Tom took Sherry Shepard as his wife.  They celebrated 49 years together.  He and Sherry had two beautiful daughters, Christina J. (Scott) Baker of Casper, WY and Meredith L. (Scott) Erfort of Salina, KS, and six grandchildren that Tom loved spending time with.

He is also survived by his brother, Ted (Deborah) Slusser; two sisters, Rebecca (Gregory) Fuerst and Melinda Slusser; and numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss Tom’s storytelling and laughter.

Tom was preceded in death by his son, Nathan S. Slusser.

Tom retired from the US Army in 1991 after serving nearly 22 years; earning a Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Medals, and a Meritorious Service Medal.  This was just an indication of the standard to which Tom would live his life.  Always giving more of himself, than for himself.  After his military service, Tom went to work for Great Plains Manufacturing, retiring in 2016, after 24 years as the Paint Department Manager.

Tom loved riding his Harley Davidson with his fellow American Legion Riders of Post 62.  “It is my honor and privilege to stand a post.”  Tom stood tall and proud with each funeral service he performed, yet quiet and humbled with his fellow veterans of the Honor Guard.  He loved and respected the United States flag, and all that she stands for.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 24, 2021 at the Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford, Salina. The committal service will be at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, Ft. Riley, Manhattan, KS.
