Obituary

Columbus Grove, Ohio

Dennis John Hoyt “Denny”, 90, peacefully passed away in his sleep at home February 6, 2023.  Denny was born in Leipsic, Ohio on May 28, 1932 to Charles and Dorothy (Ellerbrock) Hoyt and was the oldest of their 12 children. He married Carol Ann (Kurber) on July 4, 1957 and she survives.

Dennis was known by many different titles – Denny, Dad, Grandpa, and a few more we shouldn’t mention.

He lived in Putnam county his whole life. Growing up in Columbus Grove he attended the Josephinum after grade school, and then graduated from Columbus Grove High School in 1950. After graduation he joined the Air Force and served four years. He had many stories of his time flying as a pilot all over the world.

After serving his country he ended up back in Putnam County.  It is there where he met his wife Carol, and little did they know they would end up married for 65 years. They got married on July 4, 1957, at St. Anthony’s Church and continued serving their church together ever since.

He was so proud of his family and he made sure to work hard to be able to provide for them.

He had many jobs after coming back such as working for Kurber electric, plumbing for Bill Kendal, a service manager at McCrate’s, a bartender at Hoyts Tavern – sometimes he had multiple jobs. (Probably a good thing to keep him out of trouble). He ended his career as the head of maintenance at General Motors after working there for over 25 years.

After retiring, he had worked so hard his whole life, he decided it was time to travel with his wife Carol. They visited 49 states together – and made so many lifelong memories driving across the US. Along with spending time with his family he enjoyed being a Commander of the American Legion, racing his own speedboats with friends, spending time at their cabin, riding his bike, or just getting a bite to eat up town.

Dennis is survived by his wife Carol Ann and sons Dan (Amy) Hoyt, Bob (Tonya) Hoyt, David (Katie) Hoyt, and Chris (Arika) Hoyt. Grandchildren Chad (Rachel), Jason (Tara), Danielle (Mark), Trevor, Taylor (Logan), Julia, Chase, Austen, Emily, Sean, and Cara. Great grandchildren Cain, Jacob, Adam, Ava, Olivia, Lincoln, William, and Jayden.

He is also survived by his siblings Jack (Ginny) Hoyt, Shirley Duling, Chuck Hoyt, Janet Caron, and Pat Pollock. Dennis was preceded in death by a son Gregory Hoyt, siblings Don Hoyt, Rick Hoyt, Eugene Hoyt, Geraldine Laurer, Louann Miller, and Thomas Hoyt.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Mass will be at 11am at St. Anthony’s Church on Friday, February 17, 2023, and will be celebrated by Mr. Hoyt's brother-in-law Father Bob Kurber and Father David Ritchie.  Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
