Alice J (Schafer) Hughes

Vaughnsville, Ohio

Alice J. Hughes, 98, died at 10:39 pm on April 4, 2021, at The Meadows of Ottawa.  She was born June 28, 1922, in Lima to Charles Jacob and Sarah Edna (Tummel) Schafer.

On October 18, 1939, she married Donald Hughes.  He preceded her in death on February 12, 2014.  They were honored to be the longest married couple in the State of Ohio in 2014 by the World Wide Marriage Encounter.

Alice is survived by her three children, Donald Hughes, Jr. of Ottawa, Mike Hughes of Vaughnsville and Pam (Jim) Maag of Ottawa; nine grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren; son in-law, Tom Selhorst of Columbus Grove and sister in-law, Eileen Schafer.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathie Selhorst; one grandson, Jason Hughes; one great granddaughter, Claire Wrasman; brothers, Fred Schafer, Harold Schafer and Robert Schafer; her six sisters, Marie Martin, Beatrice Peggs, Mildred Gross, Helen Foust, Dorothy Brown and Kathryn Davis and her daughter in-law, Phyllis Hughes.

Alice was a member of the Vaughnsville Community Church and Pythian Sisters.

The family would like to thank: All For You Homecare, Putnam County Homecare & Hospice and The Meadows of Ottawa for all their help in taking care of Alice.

Services will begin at 11:00 am, Friday April 9, 2021, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove.  Pastor Tom Brown will officate with burial to follow in Vaughnsville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:00-5:00 pm on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam County Home Care & Hospice or the Vaughnsville Community Center.
