Columbus Grove – James William "Jim" Mason, age 94, passed away at his home March 21, 2024. He was born February 9, 1930, in Middletown, Ohio, to Alfred and Elmyra (Brooks) Mason, who both preceded him in death. On September 24, 1960, he married LeAnn Scheuer Wyse who preceded him in death.
Jim is survived by his sister Barbara Carraher, four children: Kent (Carolyn) Wyse, Laurie (Dave) Karbula, Mark (Nicole) Mason, Phil (Beth) Mason, and eight grandchildren: Amber (Lewis) Chartier, Tyler (Chelsea) Wyse, Todd (Katie) Oler, Michelle Oler, Ashley (Dustin) Ford, Dylan Mason, Cade Mason, and Ava Mason. He is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren: Addison Chartier, Logan Chartier, Desmond Wyse, Griffin Wyse, Olivia Wyse, Julianna Wyse, Maria Oler, Trae’ Oler, Kaleb Oler, Jordan Oler, Natalia Reza, Grayson Ford, Willson Ford, Aubree Ford, and two great-great grandchildren: Hayden Sargent and Hudson Sargent.
In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by two brothers: Don (Shirlee) Mason, Al Mason, and two grandchildren: Ann Marie Oler and Trevor Wyse.
Jim spent most of his life living in the small town of Monroe, Ohio where he graduated high school. He then attended the University of Cincinnati for one year, spent three years at Marion College in Indiana, three years at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky, and one year at Hamma Divinity School in Springfield, Ohio. James pastored for thirty-two years in the United Methodist Church, twenty years at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbus Grove, Ohio, and eight years as a part-time pastor at the LCCN.
Jim spent fifty-two years in full-time ministry and eight years in part-time ministry. He retired in June of 2006 from full-time ministry at the Church of the Good Shepherd. A recap of his years of ministry are as follows: first pastorate reading United Methodist Church in Reading, Ohio (1954-1955), Middleburg Methodist Circuit (3 churches) from 1956-1957, Monroe Street Methodist Church (1957-1961), Christ Church United Methodist (1961-1969), LaRue United Methodist Church (1969-1978), St. John’s United Methodist Church (1978-1986), Church of the Good Shepherd (1986-2006), and Lima Community Church of the Nazarene (part-time 2008-2016).
Visitation will held at Hartman Sons Funeral Home in Columbus Grove on Monday March 25, 2024 from 2pm until 8pm. Services will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbus Grove at 11am on Tuesday March 26, 2024, with Pastor Keith Wilson presiding. Burial following immediately after at Truro Cemetery in Columbus Grove, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbus Grove.
