On April 25, 1974 he married Gretchen Gescheider, who survives in Pandora.

Also surviving are two daughters:  Dawn (Jon) Spallinger of Pandora and Wendy (Joe III) Sprague of Lima; nine grandchildren:  Kathy (George) Claud of Murphysboro, IL, Sam (Julie) Spallinger of Wapakoneta, Drusilla (Jeremy) Basinger of Elida, Joe IV, Lacie, Jesse, Steven, Ricky and Zoe Sprague all of Lima; one great grandson: Calvin Claud; three sisters:  Deloris "Dee" Hainley of Pemberville, Imelda Ream and Mary Stennet both of Findlay,
and 12 nieces and nephews.

Dorel was an Army veteran, serving from 1956 to 1958.  He was employed at Rusco Manufacturing, Pandora for 19 years and Burry's Marathon.  He was also self-employed as an Auto Repairman and Restoration from 1977 to 1996.

After being forced into retirement due to Parkinson's Disease, Dorel turned to woodworking to fill the long hours and to steady tremors in his hands.  For 12 years, using only hand tools, he built a large detailed replica of the family barn.

The following years he displayed this barn as a message of hope and faith to those who had a debilitating disease.
